Pimlico Attempting To Break Zumba Record At Black-Eyed Susan Day

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Move over thoroughbreds: Zumba fans are taking over Pimlico, hoping to dance their way into the record books--and it's all for a great cause.

On Black-Eyed Susan Day, thousands of Maryland Zumba fans are hoping to boogie to a new record.

Sponsored by Lifebridge Health Sinai Hospital, the class will support Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The event is part of a festival in the infield that will include 100 women-owned businesses and vendors promoting health, fitness, wellness and education.

"I think it's a great idea. Besides supporting Susan G. Komen, it's really cool to see that many people get together and have fun. I think it will be a huge success," said Zumba instructor Katie Gruzs.

Zumba International and local gyms and athletic centers are getting in the action.

"I think if everybody pulls together and pulls their students, then we have a really good chance," Gruzs said.

For dance and fitness lovers, a Zumbathon is a fantastic idea.

"It's given me a lot of energy. It helps me to relax my mind and my heart and my body. I love it," said Rose Maxwell.

It doesn't stop there. Black-Eyed Susan events mark the eve of Preakness.

"We have concerts Friday night. We have the Counting Crows, the Fray and Ani Bosco. Then we head into Saturday which is the Preakness," said Maryland Jockey Club President Tom Chuckas.

The current record is 6,671 participants, which was set in India on Sept. 15, 2012. This event will hopefully have 8,000.
