ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland lawmakers will head back to work May 14.

Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Friday that he will convene a special session to complete work on a budget that left the state with $512 million in cuts.

In the final hours of the annual 90-day session, lawmakers failed to pass an income tax package, triggering the cuts, largely at the expense of education and public services.

O'Malley has said he believes discussions over a bill that would have legalized table games and brought a sixth casino to Maryland tied up efforts to pass the financial plan.

He says he will consider calling a special session to address gaming later this summer.

The governor, House Speaker and Senate President are expected to hold a news conference to discuss the session next week.
