NYPD To Host "Public Crushing" To Tackle Dirt Bike Problem

NEW YORK (WJZ)—As Baltimore City mulls over plans to build a dirt bike park to tackle the an ongoing problem, officials in New York are taking on a different strategy: crushing them on television.

The New York post reports it's a new hands-on approach to reduce the impact of illegal dirt bike and ATV riders that terrorize city streets.

"We are going to crush them on TV to make a point," said New York Mayor de Blasio Monday at a press conference at NYPD headquarters.

No official date has been set for the public destruction, but official say the tactic is to prove a point.

The move comes as Baltimore deals with a similar problem.

The latest approach to take dirt bikers off the streets is to build a dirt bike park.

"We want to make things happen in a way that's safe, wholesome, and legal," said Councilman Stokes, who is backing the recent plan.

"Any alternative to be on the streets where pedestrians and vehicular traffic is something that we are going to pay close attention to," said Baltimore Police spokesperson T.J. Smith.

As for New York, the televised crushing may be just around the corner.

"We will, a little later this spring, have a big crush-in, where we intend to takes all of these things and crush them," New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said.
