Montgomery Co. Researches Food Recovery Initiative
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- The Montgomery County Council plans to appoint a work group to research a program aimed at redistributing unused food to the hungry.
The Washington Post reports the group will include representatives from county government agencies, public schools, the food industry and local nonprofit groups. It will research the implementation of a food recovery program and produce a report by July.
The county is working on partnerships with restaurants, hospitals supermarkets and schools to redistribute unused food.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has the 10th highest household income in the country. However, Councilmember Valerie Ervin says one-third of county students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches.
