Md. To Mark 382nd Anniversary With Historic Coffins, Papers

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. (AP) -- Lead coffins that hold the remains of Maryland's founding family will be on display in St. Mary's City to mark the state's 382nd anniversary.

Maryland Day events begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the historic site.

There will be a procession, a presentation of county flags and the opening of the exhibit inside St. Mary's Chapel. A glass floor in the crypt allows visitors to see the coffins of Philip Calvert and his family.

Two documents key to Maryland's founding will also be shown. They are Father Andrew White's account of the voyage of "The Ark" and "The Dove" in 1634, and a letter written by the first governor. This marks the first time the documents have returned to St. Mary's City since they were sent to England in 1634.
