Md. Honors Prosecutors In Key Civil Rights Case
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Three Maryland lawyers are being honored for their prosecution of a tobacco farmer who was charged in the death of a Baltimore waitress 50 years ago.
The death of Hattie Carroll inspired a Bob Dylan song and helped galvanize the civil rights movement.
Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown will present citations to the attorneys at an event Sunday at the Washington County Museum of Fine Art in Hagerstown.
One of the lawyers, David Poole, has died and will be represented by his son.
The lawyers prosecuted William Zantzinger, who struck Carroll over the head with a cane because she didn't serve him a drink fast enough at a Baltimore hotel. She sought medical help and later died.
Zantzinger was sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted of reduced charges.
