Md. Finds No Open-Meetings Violation In Allegany Co.

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- A state board says the Allegany County Commissioners didn't violate Maryland's Open Meetings Act when they decided without public discussion to pay for some children to attend school in neighboring Washington County.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the Open Meetings Compliance Board issued the decision Sept. 13 after the newspaper complained.

The complaint involved a dispute about whether students from Little Orleans should attend school in Cumberland or in the nearer Washington County town of Hancock.

Commissioners President Michael McKay announced at a public meeting June 9 that Allegany County would pay Washington County up to $65,000 to send 20 students to Hancock.

The compliance board says there was no violation because any discussion among the commissioners occurred outside of a meeting subject to the Open Meetings Act.
