Md. Boy To Face Lesser Charge In Death Of Sister

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A Montgomery County judge says a 14-year-old boy will be tried as a juvenile in the death of his infant sister last month.

The Silver Spring boy also faces a reduced charge of second-degree murder, instead of the first-degree murder charge that prosecutors initially brought.

Authorities said the boy struck his sister and covered her mouth with his hands to get her to stop crying. Their mother returned home from work to find her child unresponsive.

Investigators now believe that most of the injuries on the girl's body were from insect bites. The case will be moved from adult court to juvenile court.

The boy is being held at a juvenile detention facility in Montgomery County.
