Maryland's Seniors Seek Big Finish In Home Finale
"This is a special bunch of seniors," Friedgen said. "The leadership they provided this year to get this team where it is, to me, makes it one of my favorite groups. I would love to see them go out as winners, the last time playing at Byrd Stadium."
Linebackers Alex Wujciak and Adrian Moten, offensive lineman Paul Pinegar and defensive back Antwine Perez are among the seniors who helped the Terrapins go from 2-10 last year to 7-4 this season. But their task is not complete. Although Maryland was eliminated from the Atlantic Coast Conference title chase with a 30-16 loss to Florida State 30-16 last weekend, a victory over North Carolina State in the home finale would enhance the Terrapins' stature in the eyes of those who issue bowl invites.
"There isn't going to be a letdown by the Terp program," senior tight end Will Yeatman declared.
Friedgen's affection for his seniors stems from their desire to excel. He noted that Moten has already earned his diploma, yet is taking 12 credits this semester.
The coach also appreciates the spirit of an upper class that worked diligently this offseason to erase the memory of that 2-10 disaster.
"They persevered. It's never been a question of effort — ever. They're all goal-oriented kids. I think all of them will be successful," Friedgen said. "They don't just want to get by, they want to be the best they can possibly be. That's why I think we'll play well this week. I'll be disappointed if we don't. I really will."
Yeatman transferred to Maryland from Notre Dame and played both lacrosse and football for the Terrapins. Although this was his only season on the football team, the 6-foot-6 Italy native is somber about having it end.
"I was walking home last night thinking about it and I got pretty sad," Yeatman said. "Yeah, I've only been here two years but it's been a great experience for me. I'm so happy I've become a Terp. It's been the best experience of my life.
"Coming out here for the last time Saturday might will get to me a little bit. But it's going to be really special. My whole family is going to be here for the first time in my collegiate athletic career."
The night will be meaningful to more than just the seniors.
"I want to get this win for the seniors because of all they've done for the program," freshman quarterback Danny O'Brien said. "To send them out the right way at Byrd Stadium would be really special to them."
Junior cornerback Trenton Hughes said, "There's a lot to play for. We have a great group of seniors — Moten and Perez, Wujciak — I want them to go off on a good note. I don't want to be 7-5. We want to be 8-4 with a chance to be 9-4. We deserve this. We worked so hard for this. Our seniors, they deserve it."
