Damaging Winds Wreak Havoc Across Md.
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Heavy winds wreaking havoc across our region. More than 30,000 BGE customers were left without power and many properties were damaged.
Tracey Leong explains.
The strong winds reached 60 miles-per-hour overnight, causing major damage and knocking out power lines and trees.
Powerful winds roar across Maryland Saturday evening and into Sunday, causing a nightmare for homeowners.
"Heard a crack followed by a big crack," said Gene Fridman.
Fridman woke up to the sound of a tree crashing into his Pikesville home. He and his family escaped uninjured.
"Can go only better from here," said Fridman.
The cleanup is keeping companies, like Allen and Sons Tree Service, extremely busy.
"A lot of the trees are uprooted cause the grounds are so saturated with the rains and this wind was just very treacherous," said Ben Allen, Allen and Sons Tree Service.
Cars in Towson were also impacted by the fierce winds. A tree was ripped from the ground, crushing a car overnight.
And not only were trees uprooted--a lamp post tumbled onto a car during the gusty evening.
In West Baltimore, abandoned buildings crumbled even more with the intense winds.
"Heard this loud sound, like, 'Pow, pow!' I mean, serious, like Hurricane Katrina," said James Miller.
The strong winds also left thousands in the dark.
"Experienced very high winds, so we had almost 30,000 customers that were out," said Rhea Marhsall, BGE spokesperson.
More than 120 BGE crews were on standby, prepared to jump into action.
"We were ready and they were out putting customers back in power," Marshall said.
If you are experiencing an outage, you can alert BGE via your mobile device.
The wind advisory expired Sunday afternoon.
