Thousands Honor Md. Officer Killed In The Line Of Duty

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJZ) -- Gone too soon. A massive turnout to honor Prince George's County police officer Jacai Colson killed in the line of duty this month.

George Solis has more from the emotional farewell.

Though many questions remain about the circumstances of Officer Colson's death, Friday was about remembrance. Thousands showed up to honor his life, legacy and love.

The calls came in one fateful Sunday afternoon--there was a full-on assault on the Prince George's County police station.

"The environment was incredibly chaotic. We had officers under fire," said Chief Henry Stawinski, Prince George's County Police Department.

An attack investigators say was orchestrated by Michael Ford and his two brothers, who documented the gun battle.

Caught in the crossfire, Officer Jacai Colson was shot and killed, not by a suspect, but by another officer who thought he was one of the bad guys.

"I do not for a second believe that this was a police officer intentionally firing at another police officer," Chief Stawinski said.

Colson was working undercover when he rushed to help his brothers and sisters in blue. Friday, that extended family joined the rest of Colson's family for a touching final farewell.

"Jacai was a six-month baby, and he fought to get here and he fought going out," his mother, Sheila Colson, said.

Among the emotional speakers--Governor Larry Hogan.

"When many would run from danger and adversity, Jacai ran toward it," Hogan said.

One speaker made it clear just how big of an impression the 29-year-old left on the community.

"Jacai was not just your son, he was our son," said Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker.

He's now forever remembered as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The three men arrested for the shooting at the police station face attempted murder charges.

Officer Colson will be buried in Pennsylvania, where he was born.
