Former Naval Academy Head Apologizes For Gift Underpayment

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A former U.S. Naval Academy superintendent is apologizing for unintentionally underpaying for gifts before he became the head of the academy.

The Capital of Annapolis reports retired Vice Adm. Michael Miller wrote in a letter to the secretary of the Navy that he accepted responsibility for his actions but asked that his 40-year career not be judged based on the isolated incidents.

Miller headed the academy from 2010 to 2014. The paper reports that in January, Miller was reprimanded after investigators found he benefited from a relationship with a

Singapore businessman at the center of a bribery scandal.

In a letter obtained by The Capital through a Freedom of Information Act request, Miller acknowledges the businessman gave him unsolicited gifts in 2006. Miller wrote personal checks to cover them.
