Father Plunges Car Into Ditch While Rushing Home To Save Children

LARGO, Md. (WJZ) -- A Prince George's County man flips his car rushing to get back to his children after a fire breaks out inside their home.

The two pre-teen children were home alone in the 100 block of Old Enterprise Road in Largo when they heard the smoke alarm.

The oldest saw fire when she went to investigate and quickly escaped with her sibling. Both were unharmed.

Their father had received a phone call and was apparently racing home when he rolled his vehicle.

Fire officials say he crawled out and ran a half-mile home to his kids.

The man was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators say a malfunctioning extension cord that ran behind a bookcase was the cause of the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the family.
