There are a couple chances of snow through the workweek in Maryland
Unusually cold weather that has plagued Maryland for more than a week is beginning to ease. However, we'll remain colder than average with a couple chances of snow through the workweek, ahead of another blast of frigid weather.
Much of Baltimore finally warmed above freezing
The temperature warmed above freezing for the first time since January 23rd at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport on Monday afternoon. This was one of the longest stretches of below freezing weather in the city's recorded history.
Under just a few clouds, temperatures are forecast to quickly drop back below freezing by sunset in Baltimore City. Plan on a hard freeze Tuesday morning, as temperatures bottom-out in the teens and lower 20s around sunrise.
Watch out for areas of black ice Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Any melting that happened on Monday will refreeze on untreated surfaces.
Tuesday will be a notch warmer, with afternoon temperatures peaking in the mid to upper 30s. A few places south of the Bay Bridge and along the lower eastern shore may briefly reach 40°. Early Tuesday sunshine will give way to thickening clouds.
Chances for snow in Maryland this week
A clipper system will move through late Tuesday, bringing a round of light snow to portions of central Maryland and much of the southern part of the state.
The chance of snow will start to increase after sunset and will peak after 10 p.m. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s while snow is falling. Untreated surfaces may become click.
Some areas in northern and northeastern Maryland may miss out on the snow. While a few spots in southern Maryland and across the lower eastern shore may see more than an inch of snow. Snow ends before the Wednesday morning commute begins in most areas. There is a low chance that some school delays may occur Wednesday morning. But, overall, this system does not look too impactful.
Chilly and sunny weather returns Wednesday and Thursday with highs ranging from 30° to 35°.
The next chance of snow arrives Friday afternoon as a powerful arctic front moves through Maryland. Snow showers could break out as early as late morning and continue through early evening. Accumulating snow is possible, along with gusty winds and dropping temperatures. The Friday evening commute may become slick. Friday and Saturday are possible Alert Days, due to the possibility of slick travel and return of frigid weather.
Arctic cold in Baltimore this weekend
The upcoming weekend is looking brutally cold.
A few snow flurries or snow showers are possible late Saturday into early Sunday. Temperatures will remain in the teens through Saturday afternoon in a few spots. Wind-chills Saturday night will dip well below zero as overnight lows will fall into the single digits.
Bright sunshine on Sunday will be deceptive as highs will only reach the low to mid-20s. The forecast gradually warms up heading into next week.
