Donations Help Md. Town Still Reeling From Sandy

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The devastation in New York and New Jersey has gotten much well deserved attention lately, but a local town is still reeling from Sandy.

Mike Schuh reports on what people around here are doing to help.

During Sandy, the water in Crisfield was high enough to flood most homes.

"Crisfield took it the hardest in terms of sea level rise and the tidal surge," said Governor O'Malley.

So while people there clean up, they've also had to throw out.

"It makes you humble. At least we got a little sunshine today. We'll make out," said one resident.

Make out with the help of people like Pam Perez.

"I have multiple blankets in different sizes contributing to the families in Crisfield who suffered from the storm last week," Perez said.

Early Friday morning, a bus parked in front of the Aquarium was accepting donations of all kinds. But why a bus?

"Well, it came from the folks at Golden Ring Travel who got in touch with the other motor coach operators who said we really need to do something for Crisfield," said Rich Gilbert, Md. Office of Tourism.

The owners of this company have a place nearby, and many of those coming with clothes, blankets and food are from the hospitality and tourism industries.

The cargo bins filled up fast. Water taxi driver Rosie Trout donated obsolete winter uniforms.

"We were looking to donate them somewhere but we didn't want people wandering around Baltimore in water taxi uniforms so something like this is perfect," Trout said.

In additions to the goods, a "Cleanup Crisfield" website has been set up to accept cash donations.

The operators of the Golden Ring Bus Service say any additional donations can be dropped off to their bus lot in eastern Baltimore County.
