Community Honors Malone Children At Memorial Viewing

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The six innocent lives lost during a northeast Baltimore house fire were remembered on Sunday. The Malone family held a memorial and thanked so many people for all the support the family's difficult time.

It was a house fire that took the lives of six siblings, ages 9 months to 11-years-old. Now more than three weeks since that tragic night, the family held a memorial for all six children Sunday. Remembering Bridgette, Amelia, Billy, Amanda, Zoe, and Daniel.

The children's maternal grandmother thanked everyone for their support.

"All of the support we've gotten, not only citywide but statewide, and countrywide. It's truly humbling, and you realize how good people are at heart. And I want to thank them personally, and the family wants to thank them personally," says the children's grandmother, Sandy Ward.

The children's mother, Katie Malone, did not attend Sunday's memorial. But Congressman Elijah Cummings attended, as Katie has worked in the Congressman's Catonsville office for nearly 11 years.

"All of these children were born since Katie worked for us. So at Christmastime employees would send gifts, so we knew all these children, so this is really painful," says Congressman Cummings.

Maryland U.S. Senator Ben Cardin also attended the Malone children's memorial.

"This is a loss for the entire community. There are no words we can say. We're here just to express our love and to let them know we are here and that there is a great support team that wants to help," says Senator Cardin.

It was a day to remember and honor their young lives who touched the worlds of many people.

"It's going to be a long road, a long time working towards our future and rebuilding our family," says Ward.

Three of the Malone children did survive the fire. There was a private viewing for the Malone children held on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the Malone family requests donations be made to BARCS (in honor of 10-year-old Amelia) and the National Endowment for the Arts (in honor of 11-year-old Bridgette).
