C&O Canal Lockhouse Rental Program May Expand

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) -- The National Park Service says it's considering expanding an overnight lodging program in the Chesapeake & Ohio National Historical Park.

The agency is holding public meetings Tuesday night in Potomac and Thursday night in Hancock to discuss the program.

Since 2009, the park service and the nonprofit C&O Canal Trust have opened six lockhouses along the canal for overnight stays. The park service honored the program with a national award in 2011.

Park Superintendent Kevin Brandt says he wants to hear ideas from the public on ways to expand the program to other canal buildings.
