Cha-Ching! Maryland Casinos Report June Revenue Of $72M

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Increasing revenue for Maryland casinos. Information released Tuesday shows the four state casinos grossed more than $72 million in the month of June.

Marcus Washington has more on the number and reaction from Marylanders.

That number is up from this time last year and even though that is a large amount of money, most people are not surprised.

More than $72 million in 30 days. That's what Maryland casinos brought in during June 2014.

"That's good for the casino, I guess," said Frank Joeseaph.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency released the figures, which show just how much people spent or lost in gambling.

"Well, a lot of people are probably gambling to get out of the situation they are in an d probably getting worse losing the money," said Joseaph.

We looked at the numbers and many Marylanders say they are not surprised Maryland Live came out on top.

"I go to Live and I always see it packed so I am not surprised about that," said Jackie Austin.

In June, the four Maryland casinos raked in $72 million in revenue---up 8.4% from June 2013.

Hollywood Casino generated $7 million, Casino at Ocean Downs made $4.8 million, Rocky Gap Casino earned $3.7 million and Maryland Live made $56.5 million in the month of June alone.

For many people, they see the increasing revenue as a good thing because a percentage of that money goes back to the state to benefit projects like schools and roads.

"I do believe casinos are a good idea for certain counties because it does bring in revenue; it just depends on the way they're using their money," said Austin.

"I think it's great as long as I don't have to pay for it and since I don't gamble, it's even better," said Kim.

We could see more growth in September, as the Horseshoe Casino is set to open August 26.

Out of the four casinos, only two---Rocky Gap and Maryland Live---saw increases in revenue from June 2013 to June 2014.
