Broadneck High Teacher Charged With Having Inappropriate Relationship With A Student
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The arrest of a high school teacher is making waves in Anne Arundel County. The 28-year-old is accused of having a sexual relationship with a male student at Broadneck High, a relationship that started with "sexting."
Kai Jackson has details from police.
The charges have shaken up the school campus as a full investigation is underway.
Broadneck High School is rocked by charges that Erin Thorne, 28, had a sexual relationship with a former student.
"I had her for English one year. She seemed like a really nice, usual teacher. I didn't even notice anything weird about her," said one student.
Anne Arundel County police say the relationship began in 2010 during the student's senior year.
"This inappropriate relationship began at the request of the teacher," said Justin Mulcahy, Anne Arundel County Police.
Police say Thorne and the student exchanged nude pictures through text messages. Police say the sexual relationship began after the student turned 18--though to many, that didn't matter.
"Appalling that someone in a position like Ms. Thorne is in could put herself out there in such a way that charges like this could be brought," said Bob Mosier, Anne Arundel County Schools.
Broadneck High School sent a letter home to parents notifying them of the charges against teacher Erin Thorne. In that letter, they stated counselors would be made available for students who need them.
"I think it's terrible. It's just terrible to happen," said Nancy Mullen, a teacher at Broadneck. "So we'll find out what happens."
Thorne turned herself into police Tuesday afternoon.
She was also a basketball coach. Before Broadneck, she taught at North County High School, which is also in Anne Arundel County.
