BLOG: Very Summerlike

A front, one which slowly pushed through the Eastern region on the Fourth of July and early on Tuesday, became the focal point of a few showers and thunderstorms in the mid-Atlantic region yesterday. The cloud shield actually extended even farther north than the scattered showers and thunderstorms. Nonetheless, temperatures throughout the area were mostly in the upper-80s and lower-90s, and we can anticipate more of the same around here today. Much of the discussions during the past day or so have actually been about a different front, which also managed to trigger a few showers and thunderstorms across upstate New York and in New England late yesterday and during the night. As this boundary continues to make its move to the south and east today and tonight, there'll be a few showers and a thunderstorm scattered about the area. Our 6 a.m. surface map shows this front extending from Boston southwestward to Cincinnati.

The humidity keeps rising, and will be a prominent aspect of our forecast for the next 48 hours. However, while most temperatures should be above the seasonal averages again this afternoon, they will be trending lower tomorrow. As a wave of low pressure starts to develop along the latest front to take up residence in the mid-Atlantic states, cloud cover will be fairly widespread late tonight and tomorrow. Also, showers and thunderstorms will become fairly widespread, and some of the rain could be heavy enough to cause some localized flooding problems. A series of shortwave disturbances/upper-level impulses of energy will be moving through the region tonight and tomorrow, which will enhance the frequency of these showers and thunderstorms.
