BLOG: Stormy Sunday
We will see clouds on the increase today in advance of a cold front and thunderstorms will develop across the area during the afternoon. The cold front itself will not cross until early in the overnight. We do expect a few strong to severe thunderstorms during the afternoon; however, with the best dynamics passing just to our north, I would expect most of the severe weather will be across northern part of our area (and further north). The main threat today will be strong winds, but some hail is possible.
Soundings do show a little directional shear, but it is not all that impressive; as a result a few discrete storms could try to take on rotation and bring an isolated tornado threat, but these storms should be isolated. A few lingering storms will move out of the area early tonight as the front moves to the east. Once we get through today, we will have another stretch of pleasant weather with low humidity as high pressure moves in Monday into Wednesday. Later in the week, we will have a gradual warm up and higher humidity as the high moves to the east. The approach of the next cold front will bring the return of a shower or thunderstorm by Thursday or Friday. We will still have to watch out for the potential for the remains of Irene to bring rain to the area toward early next week, but this is will quite some time away.
