BLOG: Hottest July Ever For Baltimore

Well, if you thought it was hot in July, you were right. The numbers are in and this was officially the hottest July on record for Baltimore!

The average temperature for July was 81.7 degrees, which includes both daily highs and lows. The average high came in at 92.9 degrees and the low only 70.4 degrees. Twenty-four of those days topped out at 90 degrees or higher, with 4 of them in the 100s - including the all time record high for BWI-Marshall of 106 degrees.

The heat is carrying over into August. Our high this afternoon hit 97 degrees. This time, there is a cold front coming through that has sparked a round of isolated severe thunderstorms. All the thunderstorms are scattered about as they move slowly down to the southeast. However, in this heat, some of them have grown to the level of severe. The biggest threat we are seeing is hail and winds gusting over 60 mph. Scattered thunderstorms will continue to grow and die as they move down to the southeast throughout the evening. All thunderstorms will eventually die down overnight.

Today makes this the 16th straight day of highs at 90 degrees or higher. We will add to that total tomorrow as we go right back to the upper 90s. However, another cold front moving our way Wednesday could bring some change to Maryland.

Scattered thunderstorms and rain will accompany the front as it moves through Wednesday. We will probably still top out at 90 degrees on Wednesday before it moves through. But behind the front, there is a chance that we may get a day or two with highs only in the 80s! Now, we are still talking about 88 or 89 degrees - but it would break that 90 degree string.

Another storm will move our way probably Saturday. It will put us back in the 90s ahead of it, and possibly bring through some thunderstorms Saturday.

In the tropics...

The National Hurricane Center is still monitoring that cluster of thunderstorms just east of the Lesser Antilles for development. We will keep you updated on the situation.
