BLOG: Another Day, Another Record

Yesterday turned out to be one of the hottest, if not the hottest day ever in Baltimore. Here's the interesting issue, for all of you weather buffs out there. And if you are reading this blog, I assume you are one of them. Before yesterday, the all time record for Baltimore was 107 degrees. That was set back in 1936. Then, in 1950, Baltimore changed it's official record keeping station from downtown to the BWI-Marshall airport. Since then, the highest record at the airport was the 106 degrees from yesterday. So 106 is the hottest it's even been since switching to the airport but 107 degrees still remains the all time Baltimore record. However, we did hit 108 degrees at the Science Center downtown yesterday. But since this is not the official site of records anymore, it will not go down as the all time Baltimore record in the books.

So, on to today where we simply tied a record. We topped out at 102 degrees this afternoon. That ties the old record on the date. The heat index was also close to 110 degrees today. We have another stifling day coming our way tomorrow before some relief.

A cold front will pass north of us tomorrow. It will spark scattered thunderstorms as it passes, while also keeping the heat around. Highs will top out in the upper 90s with the heat index in the low 100s. A Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. That front leaves us tomorrow night, but another will follow Monday. It's Monday's cold front that will finally give us some relief.

There will be another round of scattered thunderstorms on Monday as the front moves through. Some of the thunderstorms will be strong. Even though we will be close to 90 degrees, this front will knock the worst of the heat and high humidity/dewpoints down as it sweeps through. Now, even though we will get some relief Wednesday behind the front, it will still be warm. Highs will either be in the upper 80s or near 90 degrees, just with much lower dewpoints/humidity.

This break will not last long, as yet another round of heat builds toward the end of the week. Highs will be back in the upper 90s.

Please take the time to check on your neighbors, children, the elderly and pets in this kind of weather. They may need an extra hand to stay cool.
