WEATHER BLOG: 3 Storm Systems Affect Maryland
Our weather pattern is pretty stopped up right now because of three different storm systems. The first is a low just off the Mid-Atlantic coast. The second is tropical storm Alberto down south, off the Georgia coast. And the third is a cold front draped across the Mid-West and Ohio Valley.
The first low is responsible for our rounds of rain and drizzle Monday. We received anywhere from .25-.75" of rain across the main metro area, with most falling in Baltimore and Carroll Counties. There are still going to be bands of rain and drizzle moving across the area Monday night and Tuesday before that low moves away. When that low slowly leaves, it will allow the approaching front to really give Alberto a kick off to the northeast and opening the way for the front to move over Maryland.
Alberto is still hanging on to tropical storm status as of 5 p.m. However, Alberto is not looking healthy and expected to be downgraded to a tropical depression in the next 12-24 hours. This may even come as early as the next update. Winds are currently 40 mph. A tropical storm requires winds of 39-73 mph. Alberto has been meandering off the Georgia coast since Sunday. But when our coastal low leaves, the approaching front will be able to start steering Alberto farther away from land, weakening along the way. It will pass well south of Maryland Tuesday.
Once we clear both those storms, the front will move our way. This will keep the chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms around Wednesday and maybe even into Thursday. These will not be all day rains, but still could have an effect on our Weather Field Trip day this Wednesday at Camden Yards. Yes, it's here again! Hopefully we see many of you down at the Yards, rain or shine.
As we move into the holiday weekend, these organized storm systems will move away. However, some moisture will linger while temperatures start building to the mid and upper 80s. That could lead to scattered showers or thunderstorms, particularly later in the days.
