Baltimore Teacher To Retire After 43 Years In The Classroom

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Four decades in front of the classroom, a local teacher is honored for her service to generations of students.

Mary Bubala has more on the teacher who has stood the test of time.

In 1969 a teacher named Miss Carol White walked into the School of the Cathedral. And 43 years later, this dedicated teacher is closing the chapter on an amazing career that has spanned generations.

"Miss White is Cathedral. I graduated in '79 and I had her twice in third and fifth grades," said Paula Harmon.

Not only was Harmon taught by White, so were her two sons Jack and Alex.

"She's a really committed teacher. She's been here for over 40 years. Yeah, I would call that commitment," said Alex Harmon, Cathedral student.

"All of my friends who I am still friends with today all ask about Miss White, and that's an incredible legacy to have people ask 40 years later 'Is she still there? How's she doing?' I can't think of any other teacher that's left such a great impression," Paula Harmon said.

White's legacy is tied to a Time magazine timeline that she started in 1985. It leaves a lasting impression on students.

"The Time magazines, every Friday we would get a Time magazine and we would read it in class," said Jack Harmon.

What will she miss the most about Cathedral?

"It's got to be the kids - of all ages, because they have been the most fun to deal with," said White.

White's last day is approaching and she knows it's going to be tough to walk away from Cathedral after all these years.

"Traditionally, all the teachers walk to the crosswalk and wave goodbye, so for the last time that will be quite a challenge," she said.

White officially retires after 43 years on the last day of school, June 6.
