12-year-old girl killed, 4 others injured in shooting at West Baltimore youth football game
A 12-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured after an argument over a parking spot sparked a shooting during a youth football game at Leon Day Park in West Baltimore on Saturday evening, police said.
Officers responded around 6:15 p.m. to the park on N. Franklintown Road, where a woman and a child were found suffering from gunshot wounds, police said.
The 12-year-old girl was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A 25-year-old woman was also taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.
Police said a 28-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman also arrived at area hospitals with gunshot wounds. All three are in stable condition.
Police: Shooting stemmed from argument over parking spot
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the shooting stemmed from an argument between two men over a parking spot as people gathered for a youth football game at Leon Day Park.
Worley said the 12-year-old girl was caught in the crossfire and killed.
Police said officers are following leads in the case, but no suspects are in custody.
"What we know is that there was some type of argument between two cowards," Worley said. "And of course they both opened fire on each other. And in the crossfire, a 12-year-old little girl, who was probably down there watching football, was shot and killed."
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the shooting "one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in my life."
"Because that baby is just out here, at homecoming, for this youth football league, which is out here every single day, trying to keep people safe, trying to keep young men and young women on the right path, and this is their homecoming."
Scott added, "We will find them. We'll bring them here. And bring them to justice for that family. But that's not going to bring her back."
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Baltimore police homicide detectives at 410-396-2100.
