Baltimore Inks Contract To Bring 500 Rental Bikes To City

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Chances are, more bikes will be on the streets of Baltimore later this year.

The city has approved a $2.36 million contract with a company that will make 500 rental bicycles available on a short-term basis starting this fall.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the bicycles include 200 that will feature electric-assisted pedaling. The bikes will be found at 50 stations around Baltimore.

While the exact rental price has not been established, officials say the cost is likely to be about $4 per hour.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said Baltimore will join more than 700 cities in 50 countries in launching a bike-share program.
