As Summer Nears Gas Could Get Pricey At The Pump

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Prices at the pump are going up.

They've been climbing for the past two weeks hitting above the two dollar mark.

It's the highest we've seen this year.

Tracey Leong explains.

Drivers are pumping out more cash for their commutes.

The national average is $2.04.

Here in Maryland, slightly higher, with a price of $2.06 per gallon.

"Unfortunately I have to drive for my job so it hurts me," says Joshua Newman.

The pain at the pump is being felt by many drivers, including college student Emily Gartrell who says it's hard financially to fill up her tank.

Just last month gas was selling below two dollars, but this surge is no surprise to experts.

"Refineries are conducting seasonal maintenance, so they're shutting down their equipment to prepare for a production of a summer blend gasoline,' said Christine Delise, with AAA Mid-Atlantic.

As the weather warms up more cars will be hitting the roads and with a lower supply of gas prices start to climb.

"In the meantime we encourage people to practice those fuel saving tips," said Delise.

"I'll try to get other friends to offer to drive or ride with parents if I can," said Gartrell.

Adapting to these extra costs.

Joshua Newman, driver says he brakes as rarely as you can and drive at a level speed, don't be hitting the brake non stop cause that uses more gas.

Experts predict we could see gas prices go up for the next two months.
