350 Compete In Md. Winter Special Olympics

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- About 350 athletes are wrapping up three days of competition in the Special Olympics of Maryland winter games at the Whitetail ski resort near Mercersburg, Pa.

The games began Sunday and were set to end Tuesday.

This is the first year for the games at Whitetail after many years at the Wisp ski resort near McHenry in far western Maryland.

Organization Vice President Jason Schriml says the relocation reduced the drive time for many athletes.

Rain and mild temperatures have eliminated much of the natural snow at Whitetail. Schriml says the resort trucked in enough snow to create a 24-inch base for winter sports.
