27 Displaced From Apartments By Fire In Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Hagerstown fire officials say they're trying to learn what caused a fire that displaced 27 people from 17 apartments.

City Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven says in a statement that none of the residents was hurt by the fire Tuesday night.

The Herald-Mail reports that the fire was reported at about 7 p.m. in a mixed-use commercial and residential building on East Baltimore Street near the downtown area.

Brittany Fowler of the American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake Region says the organization is helping the five children and 22 adults who were displaced.

She says all the displaced residents found places to stay with family or friends. Fowler says the Red Cross is helping them buy food and clothing.
