1 Injured After 10-Foot Trench Collapses In Howard Co.

HOWARD COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)—Emergency crews in Howard County rescued a man after a trench he was working in collapsed on Saturday night.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of Barchink Place in Columbia.

According to Howard County Fire and EMS the man was in a 10-11 foot trench digging a water line moments before the collapse.

The patient was stuck chest deep in the trench for nearly an hour before he was extricated.

Officials say the excavation process is "among the most hazardous" and requires shoring to prevent collapse.

More than 50 people assisted with the rescue; authorities say no was injured.
