Did you know that the Maryland State Highway Department and the State itself have archaeologists working for them? Why the SHA? Easy. During initial construction work on highways, a lot of earth is moved, and sometimes historical artifacts are uncovered. That was the case in Greenspring Valley not too long ago. This morning, a state archeologist showed us items the team found in what is believed to have been a small quarry that date back to just after the last Ice Age. Really.
“Inviting Light” is a Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge winner. Eight cities in America were chosen to receive $1,000,000 to pay for commissioned and installed artwork designed to enhance urban areas. Baltimore was one of the grant recipients for the “Inviting Light” project. So far, three out of five parts of our winning concept have been activated, and today we were along North Charles Street (just South of North Avenue) to view Tony Shore’s wall, an interactive painting called “Aurora.” It is the entire front of the old Gatsby’s nightclub. Look for it as you drive North on Charles, on the right, just past the Charles Theater.

Marty Bass was at Padonia Swim Club to show you the “Doc’s Tactical Rescue Stretcher.” Invented by an EMT, it replaces the cumbersome body boards we are all familiar with as part of swimming pool safety equipment. By floating “The Doc” under someone in the pool in distress, it is very easy for lifeguards to lift them out of the water and onto a stretcher. The device then pulls apart under the patient and off said stretcher for quick and easy EMT transport to get care. This is a game changer, and you are seeing it first.
