Samuel Green was born enslaved on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He purchased his own freedom and became a conductor on the Underground Railroad, helping others escape north to freedom. Green was later arrested for owning a copy of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and was sentenced to 10 years. He was pardoned and went on to found what would become Morgan State University.
