Man in custody after gunfight with deputies, shelter in place alert in Gilmer County, sheriff says

A man accused of opening fire at deputies is in custody after a search triggered a shelter-in-place alert in an area of Gilmer County, law enforcement say.

The alert came after officials say deputies exchanged gunfire with a person on the 2800 block of Yukon Road.

In a Facebook post, the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office warned all residents north of Appaloosa Drive and South of John Call Road near the Yukon Road area to lock all doors and windows and remain inside.

"Please take this warning seriously and remain sheltered until law enforcement advises otherwise," the agency wrote on Facebook.

About an hour after the alert was sent out, officials said they took the man, identified as Neil Gary, into custody. Gary is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries he sustained during the gunfire.

Parts of Yukon Road continue to be shut down as the investigation continues.

Investigators have not shared any details about what led to the shooting or what charges Gary could be facing.
