Potential bomb cyclone may hit East Coast

Farther south, a state of emergency has been declared in North Carolina. In many places, we don't expect to get above freezing until early next week. So whatever snow falls on Saturday is going to stick around for a while.

Throughout the region, it's a race to prepare. Grocery staples have been picked clean, and lines for gas have turned into mini traffic jams. Snow flurries are even possible in Florida. Near Fort Pierce, workers at Scott Groves are trying to beat the freeze, scrambling to pick grapefruit. Well, all this fruit is subject to a freeze-- freeze damage in the event we get the temperatures that they're projecting. So, obviously, we want to hustle and get as much of this fruit off the tree and into the packing plant that we can. While most of the snow is expected tomorrow, crews also say that they are preparing for the possibility of ice here tonight. And a note on travel. The incoming snow is also impacting flights. More than a thousand already cancelled in the US, with most of those impacted flights coming out of the South. Tony.

Skyler, thank you very much. CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano is tracking the weekend weather. Rob, what can we expect? Well, Tony, this forecast is getting old. Warm in the West, cold in the East, and another winter storm coming. And to boot that, we've got snow happening in Chicago, with lake-effect snow there, a winter storm warning. So they're getting unrelated snow. But the big story, of course, is the winter storm warnings now that are over parts of the Carolinas and the cold warnings that really take up the entire eastern third of the country. But 4 to 8 inches coming with this coastal low that's developing right now. The flakes already flying in Knoxville, and they'll fill in across Charlotte, and Charleston will see some, Raleigh as well. This is going to explode as far as how much this strengthens. It rapidly intensifies. We'll see blizzard conditions in some spots, and the eastern part of Massachusetts will get it as well. Maybe 2 to 6 inches on the Cape there. 4 to 8 inches in parts of the Carolinas and southern Virginia. Over 10 in spots. That's significant. But what's even more significant is the winds. We will see blizzard conditions. We will see beach erosion, and we will see temperatures plummet as far south as Florida over the weekend into the mid 30s in Miami on Monday and Sunday. Tony.
