Vaccine exemptions hit record last year

Kindergarten vaccine exemptions hit a record high last year in the U.S., according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. Dr. Celine Gounder breaks it down.

Even for a kid who's been vaccinated. No, for unvaccinated.

Unvaccinated, OK. So if you're a parent and you don't want your kid to be home for 21 days, you really want to get your kid vaccinated because they're not going to let that kid stay in the classroom if they've been exposed and are not vaccinated. For other kids, if you have a kid who is an immunocompromising condition, who has cancer, a pregnant teacher, these are folks who cannot get vaccinated. And so it's really not fair to be exposing them to this very high-risk situation by letting our measles vaccination rates drop.
