When you marry a US citizen and you are an immigrant, you typically can apply for a green card or lawful permanent residency, but it is much more complicated, the process, when you're talking about people who enter the country unlawfully, illegally. In this case, she did. She crossed the US-Mexico border illegally. She would have to go back to her native country of El Salvador and come back legally, but she could face a 10-year ban in that process. There is a program for military families, Parole in Place, that is meant to avoid that scenario and to streamline the green-card process. They actually had a pending application for that program, known as Parole in Place. That is the reason why she went to that immigration appointment in El Paso last week. But instead of adjudicating her case, she was arrested by ICE, and now she's facing deportation to Mexico, where she has no ties. Really alarming story.
