United CEO on shutdown: "Get the deal done soon"

It's crazy. I won't be flying for a long time. They've got to get it together.

Even as ICE agents were assigned to 14 airports to help with staffing shortages, patience is wearing thin with some travelers. TSA? Right over here. It's too long. We've been here for like an hour already. It's not moving nowhere. They need more workers and stuff.

TSA says more than 450 officers have quit since the shutdown began, and thousands more by the day are calling out. Screeners have worked more than five weeks since their last paycheck.

Bills piling up. Creditors not understanding. We don't want to put America in jeopardy because we're worried about our next paycheck.

Houston Bush and its multihour lines is a major hub for United Airlines. I think it's unconscionable that our politicians haven't gotten this done.

CEO Scott Kirby. And we are holding airplanes, but when there's a five-hour wait, we can't hold for everyone. How much longer can this go on? Hopefully, it's going to be over soon. It's just ridiculous to me that it has to get bad before they can get a deal done. But please get the deal done soon.

The crisis at the airports comes as airlines have seen the cost of jet fuel double in the last month, driven by the conflict in Iran. Airfares will go up, and we'll probably be less profitable in the short term. Have airfares already started to go up? They have. Airfares are up probably 15% to 20% in the last month.

In Congress, optimism a deal to end the shutdown and pay TSA workers could be within reach. As you know, they're negotiating a deal. I guess they're getting fairly close. But I think any deal they make, I'm pretty much not happy with it. And as work to reach that deal continues, Arizona Senator Ruben Gallegos is proposing a different piece of legislation that would give a 10% bonus to TSA officers and other DHS employees who have been on the job at the airport without pay.
