Player recounts Rhode Island hockey shooting

Cell phone video captured the moment gunshots rang out during a high school boys hockey game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

We have shots fired, multiple people down.

People in the stands bolted for the exits as hockey players could be seen scrambling to get off the ice. Goalie Olin Lawrence was playing when the shooting began. I heard a couple gunshots go off. I thought it was balloons at first. It was loud, and then it kept going on.

Multiple agencies responded within minutes to find one person dead and four others injured. First responders could be seen carrying the wounded on stretchers to nearby ambulances. We learned that another casualty from the shooting was at the hospital, that they succumbed to their injuries after being at the hospital, and there is three additional victims at the hospital that all are in critical condition at this time.

Investigators say it was a targeted event, most likely a family dispute. The suspected shooter was also found dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. We're talking to all those witnesses. We have several witnesses that were here and then some that we have brought to the police station, where we're talking to them there. Now, to provide a little bit of context here-- this shooting happened right in the middle of senior night inside the arena where teams from multiple schools were playing. Some of those athletes were able to run out of the arena, call for help while others hid out in the locker room. CBS News Boston's Paul Burton has that part of the story.

A sheer terror, fear, and shock-- that's what parents, coaches, and players all experience inside that hockey rink this afternoon. We spoke with one of the players, Olin Lawrence. He's 16 years old and a goalie, and he was actually on that ice when that gunfire erupted. Poised and overwhelmed, he took a moment to speak with us just moments after the shooting. It was scary. It was a lot of shots.

I think it was, like, mid play. I heard a couple gunshots go off. I thought it was balloons at first. It was loud, and then it kept going on. So I ran right into the locker room after I left off the ice.

And then were people running everywhere? Yeah, everyone-- it was a lot-- yeah, it was very frantic. Everyone started running out of the building.

Overwhelmed and shocked, he says all the players ran off the ice and ran for cover in the locker room.

We were just trying to be safe. We were trying to see if everyone was all good and everyone was safe, and just to get every-- everyone on the door, everyone on the door.

After the shooting, many of the players still in uniform ran into this mini mart on Broad Street where they reunited with parents and embraced each other. I was overwhelmed, overwhelmed. And I was very happy that everyone was safe and got out safe, players. Players were safe, and my family was safe, so. Obviously, Olin and his teammates still trying to process all of this. He says, you know, you really know what it's like to be in a mass shooting until you are actually in it. And he say, you know what/ It is extremely, very scary.
