The dramatic rescue happened at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, on Saturday. It involved a 10-year-old boy struggling in the surf while a lifeguard, just 16 years old, fought to bring the boy to safety. The harrowing moments were captured by bystander Scott Vander Dussen. This must have been horrifying to watch. Yeah, it was pretty intense. I was walking along the beach, and the waves just kind of turned in a heartbeat. They were normal pace, and then it just started increasing in intensity.

That's when he saw the boy in trouble. Realizing how dire the situation was, beachgoers throughout the ordeal ran in to help, but the waves were relentless, forcing them back to shore. Another lifeguard eventually joined, and together the two pulled the young boy to safety. It's a cautionary tale to be wary of the ocean conditions but also a way to appreciate what lifeguards do for us.
