On Delaware's Rehoboth Beach today, we found Ben Schweers. He's a midcareer lawyer wearing a different summer suit. I felt like I needed to recharge, so to speak, before I continued in my legal career. In the back of my mind, I had always wanted to give lifeguarding a shot.

A 42-year-old rookie lifeguard, the oldest one on the beach. As a medical-malpractice lawyer back in Pittsburgh, he changes lives. This summer, he'll save them. Being a good lawyer is about being prepared, and being a good lifeguard is about being prepared. Have you had any rescues yet? I had my first one last weekend. I saw a kid, a young kid, probably eight or nine, in a riptide on a boogie board getting swept out. Went out and got him. It's a powerful thing where your training and skills is the difference between life and death.

This summer at the beach has washed away his case of lawyering stress. There is so much more than the financial end of work. So I think this three months off, which it's been physically very demanding, is ultimately going to make me a better lawyer.
