Kurt Anderson is facing one count of voluntary manslaughter after police say he shot Maria Florinda Rios Perez through his locked front door, killing the mother of four, on his front porch at around 7:00 AM on November 5. The person did not have a reasonable belief that that type of force was necessary.

According to court documents, Anderson told police that he was woken up by a commotion. And after seeing two people on his front porch, he grabbed his gun. He told officers, the individuals were thrusting at the front door. He then shot through the door, without saying anything to the people outside. Rios's husband was with her when she was shot. His lawyers welcomed the charges Monday. On the morning Maria was killed, she was simply arriving to clean a home.

In a statement, Anderson's attorney said, his actions were fully justified through the state's Castle Doctrine, which allows homeowners to use reasonable force if they have a reasonable belief that someone is trying to unlawfully enter their home. The hurdle for the defense will undoubtedly be that they will have to convince the jury that it was reasonable, in this circumstance, for the defendant to shoot a gun through a closed door.
