Some CDC staff blame misinformation for attack

Law enforcement officials are sharing new details about last Friday's deadly attack on the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control. The update comes as some workers blame misinformation for the attack. CBS News' Skyler Henry has the story.

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation spoke publicly about their investigation into Friday's deadly shooting on the agency's Atlanta campus. The shooter had recently verbalized thoughts of suicide, which even led to law enforcement being contacted several weeks prior to the incident.

Authorities say the gunman, identified as 30-year-old Patrick White, fired close to 200 shots at multiple buildings, shattering nearly 150 blast-resistant windows from a pharmacy nearby. On Tuesday, officials released audio from a 911 call from the shooter's father.

CBSNewsmedical contributor, Dr. Celine Gounder, spoke with four CDC staffers who were there during the attack. They asked not to be identified due to agency policy, but called out Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy, who visited the campus Monday.

Investigators are looking into theories the shooter believed the COVID-19 vaccines had made him sick. A search warrant executed at the residence of the shooter revealed written documentation that expressed the shooter's discontent with the COVID-19 vaccinations.

While no one at the CDC was injured, 33-year-old DeKalb County Police officer David rose was killed. Police say the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They recovered five firearms from the scene. Skyler Henry, CBSNews,Atlanta.
