Border Patrol agents shoot two in Portland

Local officials in Portland held a news conference Thursday evening to address the community following a shooting involving federal Border Patrol agents.

It looks like caller saying that he was shot twice by ICE. And his wife was shot as well.

The Department of Homeland Security posted this message on X saying that US Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop involving suspected Venezuelan members of the Tren de Aragua gang. Agents say, when they told the two people who they were, the driver tried to run them over with his car, leading the agent who feared for his life and safety, to fire a defensive shot. According to DHS, the two then fled the scene. The victims called 911 and were found more than two miles from where the incident happened and were taken to the hospital.

We have a male, who was shot twice in the arm, and his wife, who was shot in the chest.

Officials say while there are still a lot of questions surrounding the incident, they are asking the community to remain calm after many residents took to the streets overnight in protest. The uncertainty and the fear and the sadness within our community is real. I recognize that. Our members recognize that. And we are doing everything in our power to maintain that level of peace and calm and safety.

All right, let's bring in CBS News correspondent, Ash-Har Quraishi, who is joining us live from Minneapolis. Ash-Har, what have you seen this morning. Good morning, Vlad. Well, a very different scene. We are much closer today to the memorial for Renee Good, which is just over my shoulder here. Yesterday, all day, we saw people who were packed in this area along this boulevard. The intersection was completely closed off yesterday. This morning when we arrived, police were here. City workers were here. They removed about 15 tons of debris from the area that was blocking off this intersection to allow for pedestrians to come and pay their respects. It is now open. Traffic is flowing. There are police officers stationed here. This is the first police presence we've seen in the last day or so. It will be interesting to see as people start to wake up and come through this area, whether or not they'll have the space, whether or not they'll be able to interact in the ways that they were able to yesterday, to come pay their respects as they are here in this area where that fatal shooting happened Wednesday.

So, Ash-Har, help our audience understand what the governor of Minnesota has told reporters. And the mayor also of Minneapolis, expressing their dismay at the fact that the federal government is going to actively withhold information with regards to the investigation. Explain what's going on there. And is there any recourse for state officials? Right. So initially, the investigation was supposed to be jointly conducted between the FBI and state authorities here in Minnesota. That changed when the FBI, according to a statement from the state authorities, said that they would block them from having access to interviews, case material, body cam, et cetera. And the state authority, the Minnesota Criminal Apprehension Bureau, was saying that they would not be able to conduct a transparent investigation without that material. So they backed away from participating. Now, at this time, as you mentioned, the governor has said that they want access. They want to be part of this investigation. They may take legal recourse to try and get access so that Minnesotans feel comfortable that this investigation is being handled with transparency and that Minnesotans are satisfied with the outcome of whatever they do find. All right. And we're also learning, Ash-Har, about the agent that was involved in this shooting. What can you tell us? Right. That is true. What we've now found out-- CBS News has confirmed that the ICE agent who fired the fatal shot, his name is Jonathan Ross. He was a veteran federal officer with years of experience, almost a decade here in Minneapolis. Now, that same agent, we understand, was involved in another use of force incident back in June, where according to a senior DHS official, he was dragged by a vehicle during a traffic stop trying to apprehend a suspect. We understand in that incident he had actually sustained some injuries, some lacerations that resulted in 33 stitches. So this agent has been in the area for a long time. He's been part of this task force, this tactical team that goes in to conduct these apprehensions, but also involved in another incident just a few months ago. Vlad.
