Relief For Families Who Went For Days Without Power
OAK CLIFF (CBSDFW.COM) - The power is back on tonight for more than 100 residents at Park Creek Manor in Oak Cliff. It's a blessing for parents such as Sylvia Gomez who now has a much cooler apartment for her family of three.
For the past two nights, Gomez left the front door of her Oak Cliff unit open, and slept with her children in the darkness of a power-sapped apartment complex. Her air conditioning was out and her refrigerator wasn't working.
"It's been since Tuesday night. We've been calling and they (apartment management) say they can't do anything. It's too hot in here to live," Gomez complained Thursday afternoon.
Temperatures reached the mid 90's inside several units. Parents used portable pools on balconies to cool their children down.
Apparently, a massive cooling system malfunctioned, including a power shortage.
Crews worked to repair the damaged cooler, but city code inspectors had not approved the work by late Thursday afternoon. Oncor officials indicated their teams could not restore electrical power to the apartment units until city inspectors cleared the repair work. Eventually though, power was restored and tenants started feeling cool air flow into AC vents.
Sylvia Gomez and her family were forced to spend the night in a hotel, and no one has offered to credit her $700 monthly rent payment for the electricity and air conditioning she didn't use.
