Moms Group Encouraging North Texas Women To Take Off The Makeup

NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - The idea of 'beauty on the inside' is nothing new to women, but the pressures of keeping up appearances can be overwhelming.

"You're constantly comparing yourself to each other," said North Texas Carissa Bell.

Krystal Hurst said, "It wasn't enough to wear an t-shirt and jeans. I also had to dress the part of a stay-at-home mom."

Carissa, Krystal, and their friends, Amy Bass and Heather Creekmore have found common ground in the struggle to promote self-esteem. The women, who are all mothers, say social media often creates that unnecessary pressure.

"Your social media world – you can't get away from seeing what people are projecting as their true imag and it's just a made up image," Heather said matter-of-factually. "Everyone pretending to look a certain way... be a certain way. It just mounts the pressure more and more for regular women."

Amy and Heather are both fitness instructors, who see women struggle daily at the gym.

"They're on that scale every day. It's a battle they face," said Amy.

Krystal is the owner of DallasMomsBlog.org, an online community that brings moms from around DFW together to address issues.    Heather, who writes for the website, recently posted a blog about the issue of appearances.  She says she found inspiration, in the now-viral music video by Colbie Caillat, for a song called "Try."

Women in the video are singing Caillat's words, while taking off layers of makeup, and in some cases, wigs. "We were inspired to see the reaction we'd get from Dallas area moms," said Heather.

The North Texas moms are calling on all women to post 'selfies' on social media -- make-up free -- and support each other to feel confident in who they are inside.

"Just to let women know it's okay. We're all feeling it," said Heather.
