Insurance Battle
The Sunset Commission votes on recommendations for lawmakers for lots of state agencies today including the Department of Insurance. Texas Watch Director Alex Winslow hopes lawmakers get the recommendation to make the Department of Insurance stronger giving it new insurance rate regulating power. "We would like to see the legislature adopt a prior approval system that would require insurance companies to justify their rates before they are imposed on policy holders and not afterwards." But in the long run Winslow says the real battle for that isn't today, it starts in January with the 2011 legislative session.
