Candy Cane Case Gets Another Twist
There's yet another twist in the so called "candy cane case." Earlier this week the US Supreme Court refused to hear the overarching issues surrounding a lawsuit filed over officials in the Plano School District stopping elementary school students from handing out candy cane shaped pens with religious sayings on them at a winter party. Now the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the principals at the schools can be held liable because they infringed on the students free speech. "I think that's a huge decision for the future to let parents know that when they drop their kids off at school in the morning that they don't lose all their constitutional rights." The Liberty Institute's Kelly Shackelford says children shouldn't be punished for living out their faith in a respectful way.
