The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season got off to a deadly start as Hurricane Beryl tore across the Caribbean, Mexico and eventually the U.S.
Over the course of two weeks, Beryl became a historic and disastrous storm that killed at least 20 people, devastated islands and communities and left millions without power and shelter. This is its journey from near the coast of Africa to the Caribbean, Mexico and up through the northeast U.S.
Hurricane Beryl is progressing past Mexico through Friday afternoon and it could potentially gain strength over the Gulf of Mexico as it travels north to the Texas coast. CBS News San Francisco meteorologist Jessica Burch has the latest forecast while CBS News' Dave Malkoff and Janet Shamlian report from Tulum, Mexico, and South Padre Island, Texas.
Hurricane Beryl is passing Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 storm and will likely weaken before touching down on the Texas Gulf Coast. CBS News correspondent Janet Shamlian reports from South Padre Island.
"Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations," the U.S. Mission to Mexico said in a news release on Thursday.
Authorities said a man believed to have been a dealer was also shot dead in the beach resort of Tulum but the two weren't a couple.
