Two women had reported losing their children at sea, while another young woman lost her little brother.
"This small ship took on the finest of the Japanese Navy, fighting them to the end," an American exploration team said.
Artifacts include many wine bottles, including one bearing a seal with the crest of the Legge family — the ancestors of George Washington.
The treasure could be worth billions of dollars if ever recovered.

"The losses of scientific and historical information are probably significant" as a result of the damage, officials said.

The items include five gold ingots from a 1746 shipwreck, a gold coin from the third century and a skull from the Paris catacombs.
The shipwreck group posted photos and video with the name of the ship clearly visible at a depth of more than 600 feet.
